How to Clip In Hair Extensions
THE VELIA CLIP-IN GUIDE
Beautiful clip-ins should feel secure, comfortable and virtually invisible. This guide shows you how to place each weft in a balanced pattern, protect your natural hair and create a smooth, believable blend.

Before you begin
Allow yourself a few calm minutes in front of a mirror. Your hair should be completely dry, gently detangled and free from heavy oils at the roots.
- Your VELIA clip-in set, arranged from widest to narrowest
- A tail comb for clean horizontal sections
- Sectioning clips
- A soft extension brush or wide-tooth comb
- Optional: light-hold hairspray and heat protectant
VELIA tip: Open every clip and lay the pieces in order before you start. The widest wefts sit across the back; smaller pieces are designed for the sides.
How to clip in your extensions
01 — Prepare and plan
Brush your natural hair from ends to roots, then brush each extension piece separately. Decide where the widest wefts will sit before placing the smaller side pieces. This keeps the finished shape even and prevents overcrowding.
02 — Create your first anchor section
Starting near the nape, make a clean horizontal part and clip the rest of your hair up. Leave enough natural hair underneath to keep the lowest weft hidden when you move.
If your hair is very fine or silky, gently backcomb only the small areas where each clip will grip. A light mist of hairspray can add hold, but avoid excessive teasing.
03 — Secure the first weft
Position the weft against the sectioned roots without pulling. Fasten the centre clip first, then work outward to the side clips. The weft should lie flat against the head and feel secure—not tight.
- Do not attach clips directly onto the scalp.
- Keep the weft inside your natural hairline.
- If it pinches, reopen it and move it slightly.
04 — Build upward in balanced rows
Release another layer of hair, create the next horizontal part and add the remaining wide wefts through the back of the head. Leave a slim layer of natural hair between rows so every clip stays covered.
Place smaller wefts above the ears and slightly behind the temples. Avoid clipping too close to the face, the crown or any area where the clips could become visible.
05 — Blend and finish
Release the top layer and softly brush your natural hair together with the extensions. Check the back and both sides using a second mirror. If needed, reposition a weft rather than forcing the hair to cover it.
For the most natural finish, style your hair and the extensions together. Apply heat protectant first and use a moderate temperature suitable for your extension care instructions.
Your placement map
Nape: Begin with a secure foundation, leaving natural hair below the first row.
Back: Place the widest pieces in horizontal rows, with space between each row.
Sides: Use smaller pieces behind the temples and above the ears.
Crown: Keep enough natural hair free to create a smooth, invisible top layer.
VELIA pro tips for an invisible blend
- Use fewer pieces if your hair is fine; comfort and concealment matter more than adding every weft.
- For short or blunt hair, softly curl or wave your natural hair together with the extensions.
- Match the direction of each weft to the natural fall of your hair.
- Support your roots with one hand when opening the clips to remove them.
- Remove clip-ins before sleeping, showering, swimming or exercising.
- Store the set clean, dry, detangled and fully closed after wear.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fit clip-in extensions?
Most people become comfortable with the routine after a few fittings. Preparing the pieces in order and making clean sections will make the process faster and more consistent.
Do I need to tease my roots?
Not always. If your hair is fine or very smooth, a small amount of gentle backcombing at the clip points can improve grip. Skip it when the clips already feel secure.
How close should the extensions sit to my hairline?
Keep every weft inside the natural perimeter of your hair, with enough coverage around the face, ears and crown. If a clip can be seen when you move, reposition it farther inward.
Can I use heat styling tools?
Use heat protectant and a moderate temperature, and always follow the care guidance for your specific VELIA set. Styling your own hair and the extensions together usually creates the softest blend.
Can I sleep or shower in clip-ins?
No. Remove them before sleeping, showering, swimming and exercise to protect both your natural hair and the extensions.
